Smudging

All over the world and for thousands of years, the smoke of burning sacred plants have been used to purify and bless, or to remove negative energy from people, places and things.

It is important to use plants that have been collected sustainably and with reverence. Purifying plants are found throughout, so research what grows in your area and please try to avoid buying white sage since it is being over harvested.

The four elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire

Setting an intention is central to the practice, so take a moment to determine what it is you would like to purify or release from yourself or the space.

Place the smudge stick or plant leaves in a container and ignite. After a few seconds gently blow out the fire. State your intention and use a feather to wave the healing smoke over the object. Continue until complete.

Once you are ready to extinguish the smudge stick, press firmly into your fireproof vessel with dirt or sand until the smoke no longer rises. Avoid using water to extinguish the hot embers. Never leave the burning sage unattended.
